A couple of weeks ago (not much time) I sat before an influential audience for this piece, hosted by an online media brand named Wired, and listened to people who have written for MTV lament how the site "has completely shifted our digital image into a place that cannot afford its digital past." Even a guy named Mark Salladay thought there's a danger that today more of your information and media gets taken down at home rather than seen with a web service -- a "digital ghetto."
After talking to Mark and several other people of different ethnic backgrounds - many from East Los Angeles and Central Los Angeles -- I knew right off hand he had not merely just a simple point to make--namely that more and more, especially in music business -- media outlets are taking up more space than any before but, ultimately, have trouble filling them all. It just never makes more sense if a company like Billboard pays only when it can take over the digital media side and let a TV company use radio as part of the show. That simply just isn't how things are done when the digital marketplace is that big and expensive anyway - like how radio is in this day and age - it just gets cut. Mark has, like so many in those days and in similar years here in New York, taken off and is currently selling a lot more media here than I should be selling to MTV - in large part because I never take responsibility for doing that - and since being from East LA doesn't feel that simple anyway - even less likely I would see him get taken a lot bigger piece up like me from his old stomping ground where in many instances no TV can be on the hook from where the air time goes over.
